To me, mentoring means...

A really unique and special opportunity as a junior practitioner to build a relationship with a senior colleague who’s support and guidance can be invaluable in making the most of the opportunities and challenges presented to us over the course of our legal careers. I think it’s really a privilege to be able to spend time with someone who’s got so much experience as a practitioner but also offers such a broad perspective on the ‘big picture issues’ like diversity, finding your passion, connecting with others, supporting others and contributing in the best way possible to your own sense of your professional life. I think it's this opportunity to reflect upon and open up your thinking in the shared space of a positive mentoring relationship that can really assist you to engage with aspects of your career and broader professional development that you might not have otherwise considered. It's sometimes also the catalyst to take on new opportunities with added confidence (and perhaps provides that little bit of a nudge) to go out and make the most of the what you’re passionate about and pass that on as a mentor to a mentee in future

I became a lawyer because...

I was fascinated about our legal system and legal theory and loved my days at University. I was also made aware of the fluid nature of our legal system and how the individuals within it can mark change. I quickly realized what a unique and privileged position having a law degree puts you in and wanted to contribute to its positive evolution and impact upon people in everyday life. I’ve been fortunate to work in the area of dispute resolution which provides me so many diverse legal issues for consideration and also enables me to assist others navigate the complex and often confusing legal landscape. I think the possibilities of a career in law are endless and look forward to what the future may hold.

The best piece of advice I received was...

When it comes to big decisions (and not knowing entirely what to do), my parents always encouraged me to just be open-minded and to do what you love and are good at, and good things will come.

If I could have dinner with any three people, they would be...

My maternal grandmother. She was a trailblazer in her family. A migrant during the 1960’s she left everything she knew and came to Australia and created a new life here. I’m constantly in awe of her energy and vitality for life and the generosity of spirit she gives others. It seems like nothing could every get in her way or sway her enthusiasm once she has set her mind to something.

Sergie Rachmaninoff. I studied classical piano prior to law and he was my favorite composer, I particularly loved playing his prelude in C sharp minor (Op. 3 No. 2) and would have loved to hear his thoughts on how his compositions came together and what inspired him.

Susan Keifel – our first female Chief Justice appointed to the High Court. She is a remarkable woman who speaks so humbly of her accomplishments. I would love to be able to discuss her career and insights with her.
