Jordyn Bethune | Family Lawyers

What is the most rewarding part of the work you do?

It is extremely rewarding when I can use my skills to negotiate a better outcome, deal or arrangement for a client and/or their family. As a family lawyer, I have the opportunity to elevate a client’s position by providing considered legal advice and strategy.  This might mean pushing to resolve matters quickly, cost effectively, amicably, or through litigation.  Whilst this comes with great responsibility, it is an extremely rewarding part of the job as it means my work can have a positive and tangible influence in my client and their future.  By being a calm and confident advocate, I can also help make the legal process of separation smoother and workshop solutions for the benefit of clients and in some circumstances their families.  I am also lucky to be able to build rewarding relationships with clients which have undoubtedly enriched my career.

What does community mean to you?

Community to me means feeling a sense of belonging and support within groups.  It means being involved in networks that connect you to a wide range of people and recognising you are part of something bigger than yourself.  I am a firm believer that you get out what you put in.  I am grateful to have a very supportive network at Stuart Family Lawyers.  More broadly, I enjoy investing and fostering in relationships within the legal community to increase this sense of belonging amongst my colleagues, particularly as a member of the Junior Family Lawyers Working Group and a volunteer lawyer at the Fitzroy Legal Night Service.  Outside of work, I am lucky enough to be a part of a local sporting club which has taught me the importance of giving back to the community.

What is the best advice you have received?

A career in the law is a marathon, not a sprint so not only is it important to work hard and consistently so you can have a fulfilling career, it is also very important to fill your own personal cup so you can cope with the challenges that come with our demanding job and industry.
