Why do you enjoy practicing law?
Practicing law is not always easy and sometimes it’s hard to explain why I enjoy the challenge. So instead here is a list of some things that bring me absolute joy: a well drafted statement of claim; coffee with my team to debrief after a good win, an unexpected loss or a long week; pulling together the work of 5 different lawyers just in time to be filed by 5pm; nutting out a difficult advice (and knowing you nailed it); perfect cross references; meeting to plan how you are going to deal with a situation only to realise you’ve already found a solution by talking it out; helping others find their moments of joy at work.
What has been a career highlight for you?
I have been very lucky as I’ve had the opportunity to work on some truly exciting matters and with some exceptional lawyers. But my career highlight remains a large industrial dispute I worked on in my first years in practice. It was fantastic – I loved the pace, the team, the complexity, and the big brains involved! I’ve been addicted to litigation ever since.
What do you think is the most important thing about community?
The most important thing about community is that you find one, or better yet, find a few! I love talking to people about their communities – whether it stems from family, food, books, sport, politics or Magic the Gathering tournaments. Just find people who love what you love or who share something that is important to you then, of course, make sure you tell me about it!
