Oct-Nov 2017 | Rosannah Healy | Allens

October/November 2017 | Rosannah Healy, Partner, Competition, Allens

I became a lawyer because …

...I loved writing and debating at school and law seemed like a natural fit.

I am really proud of …

… My 2 year old son. I also became a partner on 1 July this year which is something I'm proud of.

You can have it all …

… Just not at the same time. You have to pick the things that really matter and focus on those. For me, it's my family, close friends and career.

I am extremely grateful for …

… My education.

A key mentor who influenced my career is …

… I've been lucky to have a few.

A key mentor is David Brewster who was a senior competition partner in my team for many years. David taught me about the law and the regulatory landscape but he also put me forward and out in front with clients and firm initiatives. He mentored me by giving me opportunities to really manage matters and develop my own style and approach. It's so important to give young lawyers space to do that. I try and do the same with the lawyers I work with now.

If I wasn’t a lawyer …

… I'd be a teacher or possibly a writer.

Before I started at Allens …

… I was at university studying a combined arts law degree and working as a legal research assistant. I joined Allens straight from university and have been here ever since, except for some commercial secondments and also a pro bono secondment.

The best advice I ever received was ...

... Just be yourself.

One of the key legal initiatives I am involved in …

… The competition and consumer law landscape is undergoing a lot of change at present. Key recommendations of the Harper Panel have just come into effect (including the expanded Misuse of Market Power prohibition and the new prohibition against concerted practices). There is also a review of the Australian Consumer Law underway. We're talking to a lot of clients at the moment about how those reforms are relevant to their business and the steps they need to take to ensure compliance with the changes.

Outside of the law …

I like spending time at home with my husband and son, travelling, music, cooking, bush walking and Netflix.
